Most reviews for my debut album were decent. However, the subject matter did generate some attention from the more conservative groups. When a local Church boycotted my apartment building, they carried signs proclaiming my music was “not fit for consumption”. This boosted my profile a good bit and a local indie music paper titled “The Streets” wanted to do a feature on me.
Meanwhile, my cousin Otis was busted buying alcohol for a minor in the fall of 1970. His probation officer was a stone-cold cutie who I wanted to put the make on. We struck a deal where I would go to her office for his monthly check-in while he posed for the magazine cover.
Upon discovering Otis was on the cover, she caught celebrity fever and they eloped. So, I didn’t get the girl or appear in my first magazine feature.
