Better Than I Was

Better Than I Was

Written by Douglas Firestein

Staring in the bathroom mirror
I scratch my scruff and yawn
Hard to believe it’s been 20 years
Where has all the time gone?

I used to live a care-free life
Thinking tomorrow would always come
So I neglected all the important people
Especially my first born son

If you’re out there tonight
I hope you can make some time for me
I would like to be a part of your life
Although I don’t deserve to be

Please don’t be upset
I did the best that I can
I grew up without a father
So i didn’t know what to do

That doesn’t make it right
If you cant forgive me, that is fine
Just promise you’ll be a father
Better than I was to you

(Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Better than I was to you

Watching as the crowd is cleared
My eyes scan across the park’s lawn
I dreamt of this moment many years
But I understand why you didn’t come

Your mother was a supportive woman
Until she tasted the knuckles of my fist
The stress of work overwhelmed me
I just didn’t man up after she left

If you’re out there tonight
I hope you can make some time for me
I would like to be a part of your life
Although I don’t deserve to be

Please don’t be upset
I did the best that I can
I grew up without a father
So i didn’t know what to do

That doesn’t make it right
If you cant forgive me, that is fine
Just promise you’ll be a father
Better than I was to you

(Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Better than I was to you

Please don’t be like me (please)
Please don’t be like me.. (please)
Please don’t, I said please don’t!

I said…

Please don’t be upset
I did the best that I can
I grew up without a father
So i didn’t know what to do

That doesn’t make it right
If you cant forgive me, that is fine
Just promise you’ll be a father
Better than I was to you

(Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Better than I was to you
